What is a sit stand desk?

What is a Sit-Stand Desk?
A sit-stand desk (also called a standing desk or height-adjustable desk) is a desk that lets you change between sitting and standing positions while you work.

Employees can adjust the height to sit comfortably in a chair or to stand and work.
Benefits for Employees
Improves posture and reduces back pain
  • Sitting for long hours can lead to slouching and lower back pain.
  • Standing part of the day can encourage better spinal alignment and reduce discomfort.
Reduces sedentary time
  • Sitting all day is linked to health risks (obesity, cardiovascular disease).
  • Alternating between sitting and standing helps break up long sedentary periods.
May boost energy and focus
  • Many users report feeling less sluggish and more alert when they stand periodically.
Supports movement and flexibility
  • Encourages light movement (shifting weight, stretching).
Customizable to employee needs
  • Different people have different ergonomic needs—sit-stand desks offer flexibility.
Things to consider
  • It’s best to alternate sitting and standing—not stand all day.
  • Anti-fatigue mats, supportive shoes, and good posture are important when standing.
  • Proper monitor and keyboard positioning is still necessary to avoid strain.
